Not a Magnificent Life

Until 1871 British soldiers could be seen just about everywhere in Canada.  A young boy living in Quebec in the 1860s told how fascinated he was by the infantry sentry who "attracted looks and admiration" because of his scarlet uniform, his shako and his long musket, which gave "an impressive stature to this magnificent soldier when he stood as erect and rigid as a statue." 72  This "magnificent soldier" so admired by the public nevertheless led a life few people would envy.
