The stiff-brimmed Stetson hats became a famous Canadian feature worldwide not only because of the mounted police but also because of the Canadian light horse units in the South African War. A good many western volunteer cavalry units adopted this type of hat before the First World War. The regiment known as Lord Strathcona's Horse earned distinction in South Africa from April 1900 to January 1901.
