Caption: A soldier of the Compagnies franches de la Marine dressed for an expedition, mid-18th century
The Compagnies franches de la Marine wore short capots, leggings, breechcloths and mocassins when leaving on lengthy expeditions through the forest. Two clues identify him as a soldier. The first item is the cartridge box on his belt, stamped with the arms of France. The second clue is the nightcap-like bonnet de police in the light grey and blue colours of the Compagnies franches.
